Abreast In A Boat Society
Email:
teamcontact@abreastinaboat.com
About our Team:
Abreast In A Boat is the original breast cancer survivor team. Dr Don McKenzie launched the team in 1996 to test the theory that repetitive upper body activities encourage lymphedema. His study put an end to that medical myth and, unintentionally, began the sport of breast cancer dragonboat racing. Not only did the women who took part in the original study want to continue paddling, but also many more women clamoured to join. Dr Don took them all under his wing and slowly, over the years, the number of crews increased to the current six. During our regular paddling season (April-June) these six crews practice at five locations spread across the Greater Vancouver area. The six Abreast In A Boat crews are named: Abreast In The Cove who enjoy the pristine wilderness and beauty of Indian Arm fjord where they practice out of Deep Cove, north of Vancouver. Abreast - Deas Divas who are often accompanied by eagles and blue herons as they paddle past the scenic regional park and marinas of Deas Slough in the city of Delta, south of Vancouver. Abreast With FORT-itude whose practices on the Fraser River take them past several historic sites including an original Hudson's Bay Trading Post in the village of Fort Langley, east of Vancouver. Abreast on the Creek who paddle out of False Creek from the dockside of Granville Island in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Abreast in Barnet who have the pleasure of paddling from the Barnet Marine park located 30 minutes east of Vancouver. Staying Abreast- our 2007 "Learn to Paddle program" for novices paddling out of False Creek in vibrant Vancouver. We paddle to make a difference - to raise awareness about breast cancer and to encourage those living with the disease to live full and active lives. To that end Abreast In A Boat has raced at venues across Canada and also in the US, New Zealand, Italy, Poland, South Africa, Singapore, and soon ... Australia!

About our Team:
The Belles are the first and only BCS sports team in Africa. We formed in April 2006 and trained thoughout the southern winter to compete in the 1st BCS Dragon Boat World Champs in Singapore in Sept 2006. The goals of the team are: to introduce Breast Cancer Survivors to the sport of dragon boat racing with the aim of improving their general physical and psycological fitness and so aiding their recovery; to show these survivors that physical activity and fun exist after cancer; to provide a healthy and inspirational image especially to newly diagnosed cancer patients; to provide a support group of positive, optimistic, dynamic friends. Unfortunately, because of the Rand:$ exchange rate, we would be unlikely to be able to afford to join you in you country but we would love to welcome you to ours. We have an International in February which would provide you with a lovely warm break from your northern winter!

The Breast Buddies, founded in 2000, is a team of 30 Breast Cancer Survivors from Wallaceburg, Sarnia, Chatham, Sombra, Forest, Petrolia, Oil Springs, Thamesville and Mooretown. "Paddle Through It" is the Breast Buddies motto, applicable both literally and figuratively to the sometimes rough waters of life and the actual waters of each race. Our mission statement: "To promote awareness of a quality of life after a diagnosis of breast cancer. In doing so, we impart hope and empowerment to all with this disease." In 2004, we purchased our own dragon boat, "Carol's Dream," named in memory of our beloved team-mate, Carol Cogghe, who passed away in October 2003. The Breast Buddies are honoured to be in the company of Survivors - a kindred spirit lights those who have fought the dragon - we salute you and honour the memory of those who have gone before.

About our Team:
We are Busting Out from Ottawa and are delighted to be in Windsor for the 2006 dragon boat festival. Our team now has more than 70 paddlers, from nine-year veterans to everything in between. We practice at the Rideau Canoe Club, on the scenic Rideau River not far from the locks which connect to the historic Rideau Canal. Our season runs from early May, as soon as the water level is high enough, until October when twinkling stars guide us back to the club house. We take our paddling seriously. Each of us has made a commitment to personal fitness and, although we can't get out on the river in winter, we train all year by running, aerobics, weight training and many other activities. Last year, along with 60 other survivor teams, we paddled in Vancouver at the Ten Years Abreast Celebration. In 2007 we hope to join the breast cancer survivor regatta to be held in Australia. But we leave room for fun too. You'll probably hear our laughter before you see us - we're the ones in the fuschia pink shirts and bright blue jackets. Web site: www.bustingout.ca

About our Team:
Dragon Boat Atlanta is a group of breast cancer survivors and supporters who want to increase awareness of breast cancer; who share the belief that there is quality of life after breast cancer; and show that exercise plays an important role in helping to achieve the highest quality of life. Dragon Boat Atlanta was started February 14, 2004. The survivor team is comprised of women from ages 33 – 67, in all stages of their cancer recovery. Most team members drive 1 hour or more, each way, from February through October, for a weekly practice at Lake Lanier, north of Atlanta. We are fortunate to be able to paddle at The Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, a state of the art facility built as the rowing, and flat water canoeing and kayaking venue for the 1996 Olympics. The dragon boats we paddle are owned by the Hong Kong Association and were made in mainland China. In the spring of 2004, we formed an alliance with TurningPoint Women’s Healthcare as a part of their overall exercise program for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Without these three wonderful organizations, our dreams could never have become reality. It is our goal, as a breast cancer awareness team, to continue promoting health and exercise, as a part of the recovery process, by participating in community events and volunteering on local and national levels in organizations and events. We invite everyone to the 12th annual Atlanta dragon boat festival to be held on September 8 at the Olympic venue on Lake Lanier. Website: www.dragonboatatlanta.org

About our Team:
The Hope Chest from Buffalo, New York became a floating support group in January 2000. We are the second team formed in the U.S., with many thanks to our Canadian sister teams and of course Pink Phoenix, who helped us get started! We proudly claim to always be "first" in our lane. In 2006 we finished production of a documentary film - The Hope Chest - Life After Breast Cancer to be seen on our local PBS station with the hopes of a national viewing to follow. We want to enlighten those walking the path of cancer that life can be lived fully after the diagnosis. Working out year round, we know when you get physically stronger, you get mentally and spiritually stronger. We know as a team, now 80 members and growing we can support and care for each other through all the joys and struggles life brings. As one of the orginial Dragon Boat for the Cure Festival teams, we have watched this event grow amazingly each year. What a blessing that we have each other and all of you to share this great experience and wonderful event with year after year.

Knot A Breast

About our Team:
The Knot A Breast dragon boat team was formed in 1998 starting with a small group of breast cancer survivors. Our team presently owns two dragon boats and we paddle out of "Macassa Bay Yacht Club", Bayfront Park in Hamilton. Kathy Levy, Knot A Breast founder and survivor, with the support of her husband, Dr. David Levy, specializing in Sport Medicine, and our team physician, formed this unique "floating support group" which has grown to include both men and women. Age, athletic ability, and paddling experience did not matter. The team was comprised solely of women in 1998 ranging in age from 30 to 65, and the only criteria to membership on this team was that a person have had a diagnosis of breast cancer. This team now has two men breast cancer survivors paddling over the years to raise awareness. In July 2005, four breast cancer survivor members of Knot A Breast qualified and competed as athletes in the World Dragonboat Championships as Grand Masters in Berlin, Germany. We continue to share with others our laughter, to support each other, through the thrill of competition and honour those we have lost. We spread the message that men and women can lead full and active lives after treatment for breast cancer, through public awareness and paddling our best.

We have been helped tremendously by all of our pink ribbon sisters of ABREAST OR KNOT, from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. As they say...”We are all in the same boat”..eh.. It has been through ABOKs’ inspired, persistent, heartfelt outreach and support and with the added steadfast urging on by Kathy Krupa of the Detroit Rowing Club, by French Dressing Jeansware and by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute that we are here today. Our Mission is to enhance breast cancer awareness and to provide hope for survivors of all ages, races, sexes, sizes and shapes… that there is quality of life after breast cancer. Our purposes are to: 1.demonstrate that there is quality life after breast cancer 2.promote wellness, fitness, fun and camaraderie through dragon boating for breast cancer survivors. 3.provide social, emotional and spiritual support for breast cancer survivors. 4.promote breast cancer awareness. 5.remember and honour the memory of those lost. About our Team:
WARRIORS OF HOPE North Bay, Ontario The North Bay Dragon Boat Racing Team was launched in 2000 after much planning, organizing and hard work by a small group of breast cancer survivors and super dedicated volunteers. We owe our success to the dedication and selflessness of our core group. Great community support enables us to continue to promote breast cancer awareness in our chosen vessel; “the dragon boat”. Breast cancer awareness, through public education, is our team mandate. Many presentations have been made to organizations raising awareness and supporting breast cancer survival. We feel that the Warriors of Hope can make a difference and, at the same time, have fun. We share our joys and sorrows and even win a race or two along the way. The loss of two of our team members and the courageous fight by another really brings home the urgency to find the cure. http://www.warriorsofhope.com

Wonder Broads
Email:
mjcolovic@hotmail.com
About our Team:
The Wonderbroads of Windsor and Essex County formed in the spring of 2003. Our original goal was to support and participate in the first International Dragon Boats for the Cure, sponsored by French Dressing and held in Windsor in July 2003. The Wonderbroads range in age from 30 to 75 years. Although we are a unique group of women with varying interests and skills, we all firmly believe that it is important to raise breast cancer awareness. Our focus is to be community leaders in helping those with breast cancer achieve the highest quality of life after diagnosis and treatment. In addition to being an emotional support group and mentorship we provide the physical challenge of paddling and the spirit of competition. The WonderBroads have a strong sense of team based on mutual respect, support, physical activity, fellowship, laughter and common goals. In and out of the boat, the WonderBroads share a sisterhood second to none and continue to be ambassadors of hope.
